Monteze Freeland  | Artistic Director

Monteze Freeland, our new Artistic Director,  is a dynamic force in American theater.  With over 30 years of experience, Monteze is a multi-hyphenate artist: actor, director, writer, producer, mentor, and advocate for Black storytelling and creative education.

As a performer, he’s appeared in countless productions, including Little Shop of Horrors, The Piano Lesson, Hamlet, and Dreamgirls —lighting up stages across Pittsburgh.

As a director, Monteze’s work includes The Coffin Maker, Hairspray, Hero: The Boy From Troy, Fat Ham, and I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, with projects presented at the Edinburgh International Festival, International Black Theatre Festival, and beyond.

As a writer, his powerful and imaginative work—like Kalopsia The Musical and JH: Mechanics of a Legend—has been commissioned by ASOLO Rep, City Theatre, Alumni Theater Company, and more.

Monteze has held leadership roles at City Theatre, Quantum Theatre, and Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre Company. He brings to ATC a legacy of joyful rigor, community building, and bold, Black creativity.
